Representative Genkhang calls on Mayor Cécile Jodogne

July 26, 2023
Representative Genkhang with Mayor of Schaerbeek Cécile Jodogne.

Representative Rigzin Genkhang from the Office of Tibet, Brussels, called on the Mayor of Schaerbeek Cécile Jodogne, yesterday in her office in the town hall.

During the meeting, Representative Genkhang expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Mayor for hoisting the Tibetan national flag, banned in Tibet, at the town hall on 10th March every year for over two decades in a show of solidarity with Tibet and her people. The Representative then briefed the Mayor on the current situation in Tibet including the separation of nearly one million Tibetan children from their parents and forcibly placing them in Chinese state-run boarding schools as part of their efforts to assimilate them.

The Mayor expressed her concern about the ongoing situation in Tibet, especially the fate of the children.

The two sides discussed a wide range of issues including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the challenges and achievements of the Tibetans living in the commune of Schaerbeek and in Belgium.

Representative Genkhang offered the Mayor a traditional Tibetan scarf and two books published by the Office of Tibet, Brussels, on the Tibetan flag campaign and town twinning with Tibetan communes, mostly from France.
