Paris, 23 March: Rigzin Genkhang, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, took part in the prestigious inauguration of the “Byblos” exhibition at the renowned Arab World Institute (IMA) in Paris, marking a notable moment of cultural diplomacy. The invitation was extended by the institute’s president, Anne-Claire Legendre.

The ceremony was also attended by President Emmanuel Macron, whose presence elevated the occasion into a significant cultural and political gathering. The inauguration celebrated the historical legacy of Byblos- one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world- and its enduring role in the history of the Mediterranean region.

Representative Genkhang’s participation drew particular attention as a meaningful expression of cultural presence on the global stage. Engagement of this nature is widely regarded as an opportunity to enhance cultural visibility and foster dialogues across regions.

In her opening remarks, Anne-Claire Legendre underscored the importance of safeguarding this millennia-old heritage against erasure, particularly in the context of ongoing conflict in Lebanon.

President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s support for Lebanon, calling for an end to the continuing bombardments. Beyond diplomatic considerations, President Macron reflected at length on the symbolic significance of the exhibition, presenting Byblos as an illustration of Lebanon’s destiny.

The event brought together prominent figures including French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, Culture Minister Catherine Pégard, Lebanese Culture Minister, Ghassan Salamé, alongside diplomats, scholars, and cultural figures from across the Arab world, Europe, and beyond.
