Belgian Elderly Residents Join in Celebrating His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday.

Brussels – July 4, 2025: The Office of Tibet in Brussels participated in a heartfelt celebration of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday at WZC De Regenboog, a residential care home for the elderly in Antwerp. The event, organised by staff member Ms Kalsang Choedon (Kiki) and her dedicated team, brought together many residents, some aged 90 and above, to honour the life and legacy of the Tibetan spiritual leader.

The event aimed to raise awareness about His Holiness’ contribution to global peace and promote his message of compassion and tolerance. The program commenced with the traditional Tibetan offering of scarves to a portrait of His Holiness, followed by a pictorial PowerPoint presentation introducing Tibet and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Tibetan children performed musical tributes and traditional dances, including the iconic Snow Lion Dance, which captivated the elderly audience, many of whom were witnessing this mythical creature portrayed for the first time. Residents who were able to stand independently were invited to join a traditional Tibetan circle dance, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.

Guests were treated to momos, adding to the festive spirit of the celebration. A photo booth featuring traditional Tibetan costumes was set up, allowing residents—including those in wheelchairs—to dress up and have their photographs taken in Tibetan attire.

A special pictorial biography of His Holiness, specially prepared for the occasion of Guton, was displayed in the care home’s entrance lounge. The exhibit sparked joy and curiosity among both residents and staff. One elderly woman, beaming with delight, exclaimed, “Oh… Dalai Lama!” upon seeing the display.

The event was filled with warmth, joy, and a strong sense of intergenerational connection, leaving a lasting impression on both the residents and the organisers. It served as a meaningful tribute to the enduring message of compassion and peace that His Holiness the Dalai Lama embodies. EU Advocacy Officer Tenzin Phuntsok attended the event on behalf of the Office of Tibet Brussels.
